Carbon Fibre Recycling
COMPOSITES RESEARCH GROUP (published by University of Nottingham Nov 2012)
Orders from the aerospace sector for engines and aeroplanes are at record levels. By supporting innovation, The University of Nottingham’s Institute for Aerospace Technology (IAT) is helping small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) share in this growth. As well as helping companies overcome technological challenges, we give SMEs an insight into how the University works with industry giants such as Rolls-Royce, Airbus, GE Aviation and Boeing. The aerospace supply chain forms a huge community in the East Midlands and the University’s support for innovation by SMEs, while involving relatively small sums, will have a cumulative impact across the region. The project is supported by the European Regional Development Fund.
OUR PARTNER
GAME Engineering, of Lincoln, has a £10 million turnover and employs 70 people, developing and manufacturing process machinery across a variety of industries. Its expertise in processing and degrading feedstock and other bulk minerals impressed our researchers, who were seeking a partner to develop solutions for carbon fibre composite recycling
THE CHALLENGE
Carbon fibre reinforced composite materials are increasingly used to reduce weight in aircraft while retaining strength for performance and stability.
Patterns and moulds are used to shape components made from carbon fibre sheets. However, surplus material trimmed from the mould as well as end of life parts ends up in landfill, which is a waste of resources as well as damaging to the environment.
Concern about the impact of the growing use of carbon fibre composites by manufacturers in the aerospace industry – as well as the disposal of aircraft made from the material – prompted the commission of the Polymer Composites Research Group at The University of Nottingham’s Institute for Aerospace Technology to develop a process for recycling carbon fibre composites.
HOW WE HELPED
Our academics adapted a process for the recycling of glass fibre reinforced composites for carbon fibre composites. We approached a number of SMEs with the design and GAME Engineering was selected to assist with the manufacture of a scaled-down version of the plant for the recycling process.
