GAME collaborate with Nottingham University in Boeing project
GAME Engineering of Lincoln has a £10 million turnover and employs 70 people, developing and manufacturing process machinery across a variety of industries.
Their expertise in processing and degrading feedstock and other bulk minerals impressed researchers at the University of Nottingham, who were seeking a partner to develop solutions for composite materials recycling.
THE CHALLENGE
Carbon fibre reinforced composite materials are now widely used to reduce weight in aircraft through their high stiffness and strength. Composites are costly to manufacture but the lifetime fuel savings afforded by the reduced weight outweighs the high initial cost.
Waste material is generated during production as well as end of life components and currently this is landfilled, which is a waste of resources as well as damaging to the environment.
To promote a more sustainable use of materials with the ultimate goal of closing the materials loop, major aircraft manufacturer, Boeing, is working with the Polymer Composites Research Group in the Institute for Aerospace Technology at The University of Nottingham to develop recycling technology for carbon fibre composites.
HOW WE HELPED
GAME Engineering was selected to assist with the manufacture of a scaled-up pilot plant for the recycling process by providing design, manufacturing and project management services to the University. Professor Steve Pickering, leader of the composites recycling research team commented, “We were very pleased with the expertise provided by GAME and the cooperation in assisting us to build our test rig.”
